Sending Signals

Swervedriver on 35 Years of “Raise”

Episode Summary

This episode I’m joined by Swervedriver to discuss the 35th anniversary of their debut album “Raise”. There’s a new expanded vinyl edition of the album, which you’ll hear me show to the band during our conversation, and in late this month (October) they’re heading out on a UK tour performing the album in full. I was joined by core band members Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge, as well as their original bassist Adi Vines who played on this album, and compiled the liner notes for the new anniversary edition. Swervedriver formed in Oxford in 1989, and they released a handful of EPs ahead of their debut full length in 1991, which came out on Creation Records. The band’s sound would evolve over the years, and the term “shoegaze” doesn’t always sit comfortably with band members, as you’ll hear from our conversation, but “Raise” I think is generally considered a shoegaze landmark. However you classify it, it is a fantastic album, and it was great to be able to spend time with the guys. I hope you enjoy our conversation.
